Frequently asked

Questions about BJJ Icons

What we cover, how profiles are built, and how to reach us.

Who do you profile on BJJ Icons?
Elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors — from foundational legends of the sport to today's active black-belt champions across every weight class.
What's the difference between "active" and "retired"?
Active fighters are currently competing on the major circuits (IBJJF, ADCC, and similar). Retired fighters have stepped away from competition but remain part of the historical record.
What does the "BJJ Icon" seal mean?
It's our Hall of Fame mark — reserved for a small set of competitors whose results and influence have genuinely shaped the sport. It's an editorial decision, not something a fighter or team can purchase.
How is content researched?
From public competition records, event results, and verifiable interviews. Every bio is written fresh — never copied or lightly reworded from another site.
A profile has an error — how do I fix it?
Use the "Suggest a correction" form on the fighter's profile page, or the contact page. We review every submission before publishing a change.
Why don't you have real photos?
We don't license or scrape photography, so every fighter card uses a simple initials-and-color placeholder instead of a photo we don't have rights to use.
Can I request a new profile?
Yes — use the contact page and tell us who you'd like to see added. We prioritize based on competition record and reader interest.
