About Gordon Ryan

Gordon Ryan was born July 8, 1995, in Monroe Township, New Jersey. He began grappling at 15 under instructor Miguel Benitez before connecting with the training group that would define his career: John Danaher, Garry Tonon, and Tom DeBlass. He committed fully to the sport around 2015, quitting a job as a garbage collector to train, and won the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship as a brown belt that year. In February 2016, Garry Tonon awarded him his black belt in a ceremony that also included DeBlass, Ricardo Almeida, and Danaher — making Ryan one of the first products of what would become known as the Danaher Death Squad system.

What followed was the most statistically dominant stretch in modern no-gi grappling. Ryan built a competitive record that reached into the hundreds of matches, with well over half of his wins coming by submission, and he became the first competitor to hold ADCC titles across three separate weight categories. His ADCC résumé includes gold and silver in 2017 (-88kg), double gold in 2019 (-99kg and absolute), gold in the +99kg division and the superfight in 2022 — where he submitted his own former rival André Galvão by rear-naked choke — and superfight wins over Felipe Pena and Yuri Simões in 2024. He also holds multiple Eddie Bravo Invitational titles and IBJJF No-Gi World Championships. His game is defined by a methodical, almost chess-like approach to control: rather than hunting for quick finishes, Ryan systematically advances position — often toward back control — before closing matches with rear-naked chokes or the heel hooks that became a signature of the Danaher system he trained under.

Ryan's career has run in parallel with persistent health problems. In 2019 he was diagnosed with what was initially believed to be gastroparesis, later attributed to a combination of an H. pylori infection, fungal overgrowth, and bacterial imbalance in his gut. The condition periodically limited his ability to train at full intensity for years, forcing him to compete at what he has described as a fraction of his normal capacity at events including ADCC 2024. He first announced a retirement from competition in May 2021 before returning, and after further health setbacks — including a resistant strep throat infection requiring a tonsillectomy in 2023 — he announced what he described as a more permanent retirement in February 2026, around the ten-year anniversary of his black belt promotion, while leaving open the possibility of a limited return if his health allowed it.

Outside the health narrative, Ryan has also been a visible and frequently controversial figure, engaging in public disputes with rivals such as Felipe Pena and Lachlan Giles, and drawing criticism over inflammatory social media comments. Whatever the controversy, his in-competition résumé is not disputed: he is widely regarded by peers, commentators, and rivals alike as the most dominant no-gi grappler of his generation, and his split from the Danaher Death Squad in 2021 to found New Wave, now based in Austin, Texas, produced its own generation of top competitors trained in his system.
